Car Burglary Prevention Tips

As a franchise owner and police officer, I thought I would share some car burglary tips with everyone.

Want to minimize the chances of becoming a victim of a car burglary? Did you know that most car burglaries happen because the driver left their car unlocked? Most burglars look for an open car door as a way of getting in. Once they are in they are free to steal whatever you might have left in there. And yes, it sometimes is for very inexpensive things such as change, sunglasses, your car registration, and cd's.

They also love stealing GPS systems, satellite radios, cell phones, and of course purses and wallets. Here are a few tips to keep in mind so you don't become the next victim.

  • Keep your car doors locked.
  • Never keep anything of value in your car. Not even a purse for 2 minutes while you drop your kid off at daycare.
  • If you have a GPS place it in the glove box or take it inside with you. Take down the mount for the GPS from the window. The burglars are looking for the mount only and still breaking in thinking the GPS is hidden somewhere inside.
  • Park in a well lit and populated area.
  • Do not keep change, sunglasses, or cd's in view.
  • If you have people over your house for a gathering, tell them not to leave valuables in their car. Make them bring it inside.
  • Do not keep your car title inside your glove box. Keep that in a safe place in your home.

If you follow these tips you should minimize your chances greatly of becoming a victim to a car burglar.

  1. Car burglaries are very difficult cases to solve as there is usually very little physical evidence left behind after one has occurred.
